European Farriery Championship Brings Together the Elite of the Trade in the Netherlands
From May 27 to May 30, the EFFA European Farriery Championship was held in the Netherlands at an impressive equestrian center on the outskirts of Raalte. The event brought together around 60 farriers from member associations across Europe, as well as a team from France that is not part of EFFA. The championship took place in modern and well-organized facilities, providing excellent conditions for participants, spectators, and exhibitors alike. The layout of the arena created a strong sense of closeness between farriers, visitors, and exhibitors, resulting in a very special atmosphere. Dialogue, engagement, and knowledge sharing were evident everywhere, creating the feeling of one large, united family. The Dutch organizing team had prepared thoroughly, and the logistics ran smoothly throughout the competition. Everyone knew their role, and any minor issues were resolved quickly and professionally. High Technical Level Under Demanding Conditions The competition took place over several days and included a range of disciplines that placed high demands on the participants’ skills. On Thursday, competitors faced challenges in both shoeing and forging, including a class focused on the rapid production of two heart-bar shoes. These tasks were carried out under difficult conditions, with temperatures exceeding 30°C and high humidity, making the work demanding for both farriers and horses. Friday’s program was dedicated entirely to forging, including several surprise classes. The level of craftsmanship demonstrated was exceptionally high. On Saturday, the championship reached its climax with the semifinals and final. The top 10 farriers advanced to the semifinals, working on Dutch Warmblood horses. In the final, the top five competitors delivered performances of outstanding quality, both in trimming and forging shoes for impressive Friesian horses. Spanish Winner Retains Title The winner of the championship was Sergio Pérez of Spain, securing the title for the second consecutive year. The overall standard in the final was exceptionally high, with all five finalists giving their absolute best in the fight for victory. The event highlighted not only the technical skills of Europe’s leading farriers but also the pride and professionalism that define the trade. A Benchmark for Future Championships As a representative of EFFA, I believe this championship came very close to the ideal model for how future competitions should be conducted. The combination of high professional standards, strong organization, and a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect within the European farriery community makes it a truly inspiring benchmark for the future.
